Laboratory Introduction

The KAIST combustion modeling laboratory pursues improving the understanding of combustion phenomena and developing better combustors through high-fidelity simulation techniques. Inside combustors, complex phenomena such as fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and chemical dynamics occur simultaneously. Furthermore, various problems, for instance, combustion instability, flashback, extinction, and pollutant formation need to be resolved to improve combustor performance. The combustion modeling laboratory aims to predict and solve the problems through fundamental understandings of flame behavior. For simulations of practical combustors, the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) methods are used which is computationally fast. For fundamental research on turbulent flames, the Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) method is used for high accuracy. Our laboratory is equipped with own computational clusters and also conducts large scale computations using super-computers. The KAIST combustion modeling laboratory also aims to realize ‘virtual design’ and ‘digital twin’ by improving simulation accuracy and reducing computational cost.
