A research team from the SSHS Lab, led by Prof. Han, has received the 2023 Best Paper Award from the Journal of Mechanical Design by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The award-winning paper, titled "A Thickness-Accommodating Method for Void-Free Design in Uniformly Thick Origami," was co-authored by Dr. Tae-Hyun Kim (lead author and SSHS Lab alumnus), Ph.D. candidate Keon-Ik Jang (SSHS Lab), Prof. Dae-Young Lee (ARML Lab principal investigator), and Prof. Jae-Hung Han (SSHS Lab principal investigator). The paper was selected from over 100 articles published in the journal in 2023, highlighting its exceptional contribution to the field. The research introduces a novel methodology for designing flat-foldable origami patterns. It focuses on maximizing the effective area without creating voids using panels of uniform thickness. This innovative approach holds significant potential for applications in various fields, including aerospace, displays, and medical devices.
