Prof. Eunji Jun’s KNGPDL (KAIST Non-equilibrium Gas & Plasma Dynamics Laboratory) in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at KAIST has been selected for a joint research project with Justus Liebig University Giessen under the Korea–Germany Partnership Program (GEnKO).
The project aims to jointly validate the two key components of air-breathing electric propulsion (ABEP) for Very Low Earth Orbit: the intake and the RF neutralizer, combining rarefied-flow modeling and plasma experiments.
KNGPDL will perform kinetic simulations of rarefied intake flows and gas–surface interactions, while Giessen will conduct RF thruster and neutralizer experiments with advanced plasma diagnostics. Through systematic experiment–model comparison, the collaboration will optimize the intake design and establish a neutralizer model capable of stable operation under atmospheric conditions.
This selection highlights the international research capability of KAIST KNGPDL in VLEO propulsion and electric propulsion technologies
