CU Boulder Specialist Seminar Series @KAIST AE #5

Transient Growth and Decay of Aeroelastic Stall Flutter

ㅁ Speaker: : Prof. John Farnsworth (University of Colorado Boulder)
ㅁ Time/Venue: : Tuesday October 25, 1:00 – 2:00 pm
ㅁ Room N7-2602, KAIST

ㅁ Abstract:
The pursuit of achieving greater aerodynamic efficiency has driven designers of both high-altitude, long endurance aircraft and horizontal axis wind turbines towards larger spans with structures composed of lightweight, flexible composite materials. These design choices, coupled with the unsteady aerodynamic environments in which these systems operate, has driven the need for better understanding, prediction, and control of various aeroelastic phenomena. To help address this need, experiments have been carried out at the University of Colorado Boulder on a canonical wing section undergoing stall flutter limit-cycle oscillations through the use of a cyber-physical control system within the unsteady, low-speed wind tunnel. A detailed discussion of the aeroelastic performance of the wing will be made under steady-state and transient conditions utilizing measurements of the wing kinematics, aerodynamic torque, and the surrounding flow field. In addition to this detailed discussion, a brief summary of other basic research efforts ongoing in the Experimental Aerodynamics Laboratory at the University of Colorado Boulder will be given related to the study of unsteady, three-dimensional aerodynamic phenomena

ㅁ Speaker Bio:
Dr. John Farnsworth is an Assistant Professor in the Ann and H.J. Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder. Prior to joining the faculty in 2014, he served as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Aeronautics at the United States Air Force Academy for three years. Dr. Farnsworth received his Ph.D. in Aeronautical Engineering from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in 2011. He also received both his B.S. and M.S. in Aeronautical Engineering from RPI in 2006 and 2007, respectively. Dr. Farnsworth is the director of the Experimental Aerodynamics Laboratory, and his research is focused in the areas of understanding and controlling complex three-dimensional unsteady flow fields for aerodynamic applications. These topics include, but are not limited to: fluid-structure interactions, turbulence, highly three-dimensional regions of flow separation, and the design of novel fluidic actuators for flow control.
