Dong-yoon Shin, an undergraduate student in aerospace engineering, was named the winner of the 2022 Global Leadership Award’s Challenge Division. The Challenge Division of the Global Leadership Award is granted to students who are recognized for having an exceptional challenging spirit among KAIST's core qualities of "creativity, challenge, and caring."

Dong-yoon Shin, who is also the CEO of Perigee Aerospace Inc., developed a rocket to commemorate KAIST's 50th anniversary in cooperation with the Aerospace Engineering (AE) department and test-launched it in Yongsu-ri, Hangyeong-myeon, Jeju Island on December 2021. The test launch sparked public interest in the possibility of civilian rocket launches, as well as in Korean aerospace engineering.

These feats came about as a result of overcoming several obstacles. All major rocket components, including liquid rocket engines, avionics equipment, software, and ground control systems, were built over the course of over one year of research and development. Another issue was the launch regulations and lack of civilian licensing procedures. Shin Dong-yoon flew to Jeju and Daejeon more than ten times in six months to get launch approval, and after consulting with the Jeju Provincial Government, devised airspace and maritime control procedures.

Dong-yoon aspires to continue working as the CEO of Perigee Aerospace Inc. while pursuing a master’s degree in aerospace engineering at KAIST.
