Type-3 composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs) are increasingly being validated through research and practical applications for launch vehicles because of their lightweight and high-pressure strength. However, filament winding process is prone to internal defects and results in mechanical property deviation in each manufactured COPV. Moreover, defect growth in extreme launch environment can lead to mission failure. Therefore, COPVs used for launch vehicles should be inspected with more advanced non-destructive testing that can provide precise and reliable defect characterization for each part.

Recently, Ph.D. student Kyu Jin, Lee and Professor Jung Ryul, Lee developed a rotational pulse-echo ultrasonic propagation imager (R-UPI) and perform defect evaluation. Developed system irradiates pulsed-laser following the step movement of rotational and linear stage motion, acquiring laser-induced ultrasonic signals using laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) simultaneously. The inspection was performed on type-3 COPV specimen that has depth-wise, material, and size classified internal defects. Inspection results validated the performance of the proposed system and applicability in the aerospace sector. The related paper has been published in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) in 2024. The SHM journal is a reputable journal that covers defect detection and structural integrity in wide industrial applications (IF: 5.7, IF top 9.9%, Q1).
