The research led by Professor Sung Min Jo of the Applied Aero-Thermodynamics Group (AAG) at KAIST has been selected for the Early-career Researcher Program by the National Research Foundation of Korea. The title of the research is “Electrodynamic plasma control technique toward blackout and thermal load mitigation for space exploration vehicle,” and it will receive approximately 1.2 billion KRW in research and development funding over the next five years.
This project aims to develop electromagnetic-based control technologies that can drastically reduce aero-thermal heating and communication blackout in hypersonic re-entry vehicles. The research focuses on the conceptual design and ground testing of a thermal protection system capable of electrodynamic plasma control using electromagnets and electrically enhanced transpiration cooling. It is expected that this work will not only secure essential core technologies but also contribute to training the next generation of experts in space development.
